Television Sets - Technology & Reviews

If you are in the market for a new TV then you will need a better understanding of current TV technology and unbiased reviews. The "Stop the FOMO" YouTube Channel is a great source of information. Start by watching the following video from "FOMO"...  TV Technology in 2024
The following video from "Smart Home Sounds" covers all the TV Panel Types, including Micro-LED...  TV Panel Type Buying Guide 2024. The most popular TV brands are not owned by American companies. Chinese company owned brands include Hisense and TCL. Japanese company owned brands include Panasonic and Sony. South Korean company owned brands include LG and Samsung.

The following article from "Digital Trends" explains the difference and the pro's and con's between QLED and OLED. Both QLED and Mini-LED still require the use of LCD's. There is a video in the article if you prefer watching videos... QLED vs. OLED  If you are currently shopping for a TV then watch this... Which TV to buy in 2025. The following video from "Digital Trends" explains TV Types. It starts with CRT TVs and it includes Micro-LED...  Every TV Type Explained

"Allen Fleckney TV Repair" has a YouTube Channel where the owner speaks about repairing TVs. He gives his opinion on which TVs are the worst and which TVs are the best, based on the TVs he sees in his repair shop.
He recommends getting an extended warranty (5yr) when buying a TV. The shop is located in the UK so costs are given in pounds instead of dollars Worst and Best TVs . The following video talks about more recent problems with TVs that he sees in his shop Everyone will have a screen failure. There is an older video that explains why even the best brands (Panasonic, Sony, LG, etc.) of LED TVs (QLED, MiniLED, etc) can fail due to the design commonly used for LED TV backlights The Great LED TV Con. He also says that OLED TVs last longer than LED TVs but OLED TVs can be susceptible to image retention and burn-in, depending on viewing habits. RTINGS.COM R&D has done testing on 100 TV models for reliability and OLED TV Image Retention There is also a video on LCD TV longevity.

Visit Omni Calculator to calculate the optimal positioning (Distance and Height) for your TV based on the size of your screen.

Universal Remote Control - One For All

The reason for purchasing a Universal Remote Control can vary. You may be tired of having multiple remote controls for all your devices. Maybe you just purchased a flat-panel Plasma TV from a thrift store at a great price and the remote control is missing. For whatever reason you are shopping for a new remote control, look for one that is Backlit and Learning. "One For All" is a brand from Universal Electronics, Inc. which many have come to trust. There is a webpage dedicated to the Cinema 7. Note that some of the information at www.hifi-romote.com is outdated. Advanced Codes listed on the site may not work for newer universal remote controls and devices. If any buttons on your UEI Universal Remote Control do not function with your device, you may be able to reprogram the Original Button Codes (OBCs) with Extended Function Codes (EFCs) for those buttons. If you want to get deep into programming your remote, visit the JP1 Remotes Forum.

3D Glasses - Active Shutter

Flat-panel 3D TVs were available to consumers from about 2010 till 2017. The TVs require expensive Active Shutter Glasses in order to view 3D content. Early models of 3D TVs used Infrared (IR) to Synchronize with the 3D glasses. Finding replacement 3D glasses that support IR can be a challenge.
You can hold the camera of your phone up to the IR Emitter of your TV, while in 3D mode, to verify the emitter is still working (look for pink or purple light). Later models of 3D TVs use Radio Frequency (RF/Bluetooth) to Sync. 3D glasses are powered by either replaceable or rechargeable batteries. It can get expensive replacing batteries in glasses that do not offer long battery life. 3D glasses with rechargeable batteries can fail and no longer take a charge if not used and recharged on a regular basis. XPANDVISION offers both IR (X105-IR-X1) and RF (X105-RF-X1) models with rechargeable batteries. Visit "The Illustrated 3D Movie List" website if you are in need of information on replacement 3D glasses for your TV and much more related to 3D. You can still purchase Projectors that support 3D content. Projectors use DLP-Link to sync with 3D glasses. The following video from "That Shelf" discusses 3D in 2024 and includes a Review of Xpand X105-DLP-X1 3D glasses. "Brian's Tech Therapy" showcases a projector with 3D support from Valerion in the following video... Valerion Visionmaster Pro 2

You can watch 3D Anaglyph videos available on YouTube using any TV, if you have a pair of Red/Cyan 3D glasses. You can also use free software to convert 2D videos into simulated stereoscopic 3D. Bino is a 3D video player which is also able to convert 2D videos into 3D "on-the-fly", as you watch. Use MP4/MOV, MPEG-TS, or MPEG-PS (in order of increasing file size) instead of AVI container/encapsulation type in your videos to avoid audio/video sync problems in Bino. You can download a Windows installation program for Bino (1.6.8) at VideoHelp.com. After you load a video file into Bino, set the "Output" to "Red/cyan glasses, full color". Under "Preferences" > "Settings" > "Video" set the "Parallax" value (0.10). If audio and video are out of sync go to "Preferences" > "Settings" > "Audio" and adjust the "Audio delay" setting (We have seen no change after adjusting the "Audio delay" setting). Double click in your video to enter and exit Bino fullscreen mode. IQmango 3D Video Converter is used to convert 2D videos into 3D video files. You can use VLC media player to backup/copy movies from DVDs you own, in order to watch them in 3D. Be sure to set the "Frame Rate" to 29.97 fps (NTSC) in the "Video codec" (H-264) settings to avoid audio/video sync problems. For "Audio codec" check the box "Keep original audio track" or use MP3. Detailed instructions for converting DVDs to Bino and IQmango compatible videos are available here. Video converted from 2D into simulated stereoscopic 3D does not offer the same depth and quality as video originally filmed in 3D. Purists may believe that converting 2D movies into 3D is a bad idea, just as Colorization was criticized when it was first introduced. High quality true stereoscopic 3D images and more free 3D software (StereoPhoto Maker Pro) can be found on Muttyan's Home Page.

Antennas - Coverage

Finding the best antenna for where you live can be a challenge. Channel reception is affected by your distance from the broadcasting tower and your antenna range, location, and size. Rain and strong wind, trees, airplanes, etc., can affect reception. Some may be able to get all channels with an indoor antenna, while others may need an outdoor antenna. Search the web and read to find out what is best for you. The following site is a good place to start learning...TV Antenna. Visit AntennaWeb to find out where broadcast towers are located in relation to your home and what type of antenna is needed.
RabbitEars provides a Signal Search Map tool for a more accurate and detailed report for your specific location. Click "Get Location" > "Allow" > "Go" to get a report. Antenna Man has a video with tips to Improve TV Reception and a video on Combining two antennas. If you use an attic or outdoor antenna, make sure you have a quality cable (RG-6 compared to inferior RG-59), to avoid reception issues caused by signal loss. Scripps (Owner of several TV Networks and Stations) has recently launched a website (TheFreeTVProject.org) as part of a campaign to promote OTA TV. The "AVS Forum" has a section dedicated to over-the-air TV viewers in Atlanta. You can post messages, if you become a member... AVS Forum - Atlanta OTA

If you are using an indoor antenna with both UHF (Digital/RF Channel 14 thru 36) and Rabbit Ear VHF (Digital/RF Channel 2 thru 13), extending the rabbit ears (VHF) on the antenna may help with receiving some Virtual Channels (8, 9, 11, 12). Having either the left or right rabbit ear dipole shorter than the other may help to reduce constant fluctuations in signal strength, which some may experience with channel 9 and 12. You will have to experiment to find what is best for your location. Stations with a power of 7kW and less may be too weak, if you live too far outside of the perimeter. Visit RabbitEars and check out the Coverage Maps to get more information on signal strengths in your area. Set Longley-Rice to "Show" and click Apply to see detailed information. The color Yellow indicates that it is difficult for an indoor antenna to receive the selected channel. Links to Coverage Maps for Atlanta Channels are included in the table below... Example Coverage Map

Reception - ATSC 3.0/NextGenTV

Reception issues with ATSC 1.0, the current system, will hopefully be reduced with the introduction of ATSC 3.0/NextGenTV. Stations that switch to ATSC 3.0 must also broadcast in ATSC 1.0 until July 17, 2027 , as required by the FCC. Some predict that ATSC 1.0 will be available many years beyond that date (Antenna Man). There is a TV Station in Eugene, Oregon (K03IM-D) which is able to broadcast a 4K (2160P) signal in ATSC 1.0, by using newer video codecs. Here is an Antenna Man video interview with the station owner. Several TV Stations in the United States are already beginning to switch to the newer MPEG-4/H.264 video codec while broadcasting in ATSC 1.0 (Antenna Man). WUVG-DT is doing this on Channel 34.4 and 34.5 in Atlanta. If you own a TV or Set-Top Box (STB) built prior to 2015 you may receive audio without video on those stations. The Zenith DTT901 STB will display the words "AUDIO ONLY" on those stations. STB's/External Tuners are also available for receiving ATSC 3.0 on TVs without a built-in ATSC 3.0 tuner. External ATSC 3.0 tuners available at this time are expensive ($90.00 and more). We may have to wait a while to see better prices. More information about ATSC 3.0 is available at TV Tech and Digital Trends. The official NextGenTV website lists cities that already have ATSC 3.0 and the stations that are available in those cities. ATSC 3.0 has been available in Atlanta since August 19, 2021. RabbitEars has a List of Stations that have filed with the FCC as ATSC 3.0 stations and their current status. Here are a couple of informative videos about ATSC 3.0 presented by Antenna Man... ATSC 3.0 Part1   ATSC 3.0 Part2.

Tuners (ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0) that are built-in are not always the most effective. Some TV brands can be better than others. If the tuner in your TV is having trouble receiving some of the weaker channels in your area, you could try connecting an external tuner to your TV. We have found that even using an old Zenith DTT901 STB will bring in weaker signals that a newer TV has trouble receiving. Note that the resolution of the video coming out of the Composite (RCA) connectors of the Zenith box will only be 480i. Since the weaker channels are typically only 480i resolution, nothing is lost by using this external tuner. Run a cable from the "RF Out" of the box to the "RF In" of your TV, so that you can still use the built-in tuner of your TV for stations with a strong signal and higher resolution video. When using your TV's built-in tuner, be sure to turn off the external tuner to avoid signal loss. Newer Set-Top Boxes, such as Zapperbox, include an HDMI port for resolutions of 4K, 1080p, 720p, and support for HDR.

If a Network is having technical difficulties, the local station is typically the one who needs to fix the problem. Contacting the Network (Charge!, etc.) will only help if that Network is willing to contact your local station. AntennaTV will contact local stations/affiliates after posts to their Facebook page. Some Networks have contact information on their website.
Be sure to include the station name (WUEO-LD or other) when reporting a problem. WPCH-TV is aware of the pixelation on Channel 17.4 and is seeking a solution to the problem. Make sure your problem is not caused by an issue with your antenna before contacting a Network or local station. If your picture is breaking up, it could be that your antenna is not adequate for your location or weather conditions are affecting the signal. Sometimes you will need to re-scan to get a channel back, if it has disappeared. A full scan is the most reliable method for restoring channels and finding new channels. If your TV is equipped with an "EZ Add" or similarly named feature, use that feature with the knowledge that it is not completely reliable. However, on rare occasions the "EZ Add" feature will work when a full scan is not working to restore a channel.

Programming Info - Networks

For daily programming information, covering all available over-the-air channels (Broadcast Stations) in the Atlanta area, we recommend TitanTV.com. To create or add a new channel "Lineup", click the + symbol  > choose a "Program Source" (Broadcast) > enter your Zip Code > select a "Provider" (Broadcast - Atlanta GA). To Delete a "Lineup", click the Gear symbol > click the "My Lineups" tab > click the X next to the "Lineup" you want to delete. The "Grid Settings" tab allows you to customize the Grid. Make sure that you click "Save" near the bottom of the settings. You can search for shows on TitanTV by entering the name of a show in "Search for Programming" > Click on the show name in the search results > "View Additional Airings" to see all the show times for that show. Actual channel numbers do not always match with the channel numbers listed on TitanTV.com. Atlanta programming can sometimes vary from what is listed on TVGuide.com and TitanTV.com. You can also check the scrolling program guide on Channel 9.1 for a current listing of shows. Most, but not all, of the Atlanta broadcast channels are listed in the Atlanta Program Guide.

The FCC requires a minimum of three hours of children's programing each week. This programing is listed as E/I and is typically broadcast Saturday and Sunday mornings. This accounts for some of the differences in what is listed and what is broadcast. Local stations/affiliates can show different programming for other reasons as well.

Some of the best programming is shown by networks owned by companies you may have never heard of. The list of companies includes Weigel Broadcasting ("MeTV" (Available in Metro Atlanta thanks to Marquee Broadcasting), "MeTV Toons", "Catchy Comedy", "Heroes & Icons", "StartTV", "Dabl",  "Story". Weigel Broadcasting is also part owner of "Movies!", a joint venture with FOX.), Get After It Media ("RetroTV", "The Family Channel", "Rev'n", "The Action Channel", "Heartland".), Scripps ("Bounce", "Court TV", "Grit", "ION", "ION Plus", "ION Mystery", "Laff".), Sinclair Broadcast Group ("Comet", "Charge!", "ROAR.", "The Nest".), Nexstar Media Group ("Antenna TV", "The CW", "Rewind TV".), TEGNA ("Quest", "True Crime"), Free TV Networks ("365BLK", "OUTLAW", "Defy", "BUSTED"), Sony Pictures ("Get"), and Paramount ("Fave TV").

Streaming - Chromecast

Although this website is dedicated to Over-the-Air TV, we want to mention websites that offer Free TV Shows and Movies via streaming, also known as Over-the-Top (OTT). Streaming can be defined, in the most simplistic way, as watching videos over the internet. Be aware of your internet data allowance to avoid added charges from your internet service provider. Pluto TV and Tubi are among the most popular streaming services at this time.
Even Roku, which is known for TVs and Streaming Devices, offers free streaming at The Roku Channel. Most companies offer various channels in a wide range of interests including News, TV Shows, Movies, and more. You can also look for a specific TV Show or Movie by entering the name in the search tool near the top of most of the streaming service websites. Streaming is also available on Cineverse, Local Now, Plex, Shout! TV, Sling, Stirr, and Xumo. The list continues to grow with The CW adding streaming channels and more, not just their own TV Shows, in 2024. Some Networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS) provide free streaming of their TV Shows. If you get error messages (error code: 3304 or other) try using the Firefox web browser. History, which is on cable, has some shows available for free. You do not have to register to watch most of the content on the websites we have listed. These free streaming services are often referred to as FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming Television).

Streaming on your Smart TV instead of watching on your smaller computer screen can be done by "Mirroring" from a Miracast compatible device (Computer, Smart Phone, etc.). Computers with at least Windows 8.1 (2013 and newer) may support Miracast if your Video Card and Driver as well as your WiFi Adapter and Driver support it. If you have Windows 7 and use Chrome as your web browser, you still may be able to use the "Cast" command in Chrome for streaming YouTube videos to your Smart TV. You may also be able to stream videos to your Smart TV by using Windows Media Player. If you do not have a Smart TV, a Streaming Blu-ray player connected to an older TV, with a HDMI connection, can be used for streaming. However, the Blu-ray player may limit what you are able to stream. Even if you own a Smart TV you may not have access to all the Streaming services you want. In order to fully enjoy streaming, you can connect a Chromecast device (dongle) to your TV.  The Appliances Reviews website provides a good overview of AnyCast/Miracast and Chromecast. You can search the web for other devices similar to Chromecast.

You can enjoy streaming Nature Videos , Music, and Stunning Drone Videos from around the world using a streaming device. Chromecast with Google TV (HD) currently (July-2023) sells for about $30.00 at Best Buy. Your TV must be equipped with a HDMI connection. Your internet speed needs to be a minimum of 5 Mbps (20 Mbps for the more expensive Chromecast with Google TV (4K)). You will need a Wi-Fi Network and a Gmail account (Free) in order to set up Chromecast. You do not have to use a mobile device (Android Phone, iPhone, etc.) to set up Chromecast. Simply choose the "Set up on TV instead" option. After Chromecast is set up, you can stream to your TV directly from your Computer using the "Cast" command in Chrome. You can also use a Smart Phone or any other Wi-Fi device in order to stream to your TV. You do not have to use the remote control that comes with Chromecast. However, the remote control does give you access to much more content and the convenience of voice control. Google has stopped (Feb 2025) selling "Chromecast with Google TV". They only sell the much more expensive "Google TV Streamer" at this time. Walmart still (March 2025) sells the Onn Google TV 4K Streaming Box (dongle) for about $20.00. Set up for the Onn Google TV Streaming Box is the same as the set up used for Chromecast. The Streaming websites (PlutoTV, Tubi, etc.) available for streaming on the dongle you purchase depends on which apps are available and installed on that device. Reviews.org provides a list of 10 free streaming apps available on Chromecast with Google TV. Many of the videos you may watch on Chromecast are available through YouTube. Highlight a video and hold the Select button on the Chromecast Voice Remote to save ("Watch later") a video for future viewing. Launch the YouTube App and navigate to the on-screen menu on the left side of your screen. Choose "Library" in order to access your "Watch later" list and also access "History" for a listing of previously watched videos. Streaming does not provide the same high quality video as OTA TV but it does give you access to more free content to watch. We recently (17-Nov-2023) had an issue with our Chromecast. It was not responding to the remote control. Checking on our computer to see if it was listed in the Cast Tab of Google Chrome showed it was missing. We unplugged the power cord of the Chromecast dongle and after a few minutes plugged it back in. This fixed the problem. We are still very happy with Chromecast in spite of this one problem.

Gaming - GeForce NOW

You can "Cast" computer games from your PC to your TV using a streaming device. The game must support running in Window Mode. Start by launching Google Chrome web browser. Choose "Cast" and change "Sources" to "Cast Screen". Then choose your TV listed in the Cast Tab. Launch your game and it should be seen on your TV. If your computer is displayed as a box instead of filling your entire TV screen you may want to change the Display settings on your computer. Changing Display settings will cause your desktop icons to be rearranged ( Extend Desktop ). You may need to use the "Duplicate these displays" option instead of  "Extend these displays" when you get to the step of choosing the "Multiple displays" setting. We have tested casting the games "MotoGP 08" and "Need for Speed: Shift". We used the free program X360CE
(Xbox 360 Controller Emulator 3.x) in order to perform the tests using an old Microsoft SideWinder Joystick. The website for the X360CE program contains instructions as well as a newer version of the software. Before running the program, verify that you have Modify/Write access to the folder that contains the .EXE file for your game. We noticed some lag when casting the games we tested. It seems to be related to the low level of remaining CPU resources on our computer. Would a more powerful computer not see the same lag when playing games which require higher levels of CPU processing power? We leave the answer to that question to those with more advanced computer knowledge.

Lag that is experienced when playing games on your TV may be eliminated by running games that are cloud based. Chromecast and Onn with "Google TV" include the "GeForce NOW" app. This app allows you to play cloud based games on your TV.
You can login to "GeForce Now" on your computer, using Google Chrome, at the loginwall or at geforcenow.com/login, when provided with a PIN from the app. You can login, using Google Chrome, at "Epic Games Store" (store.epicgames.com) and at "Steam" (store.steampowered.com) to get games you can play in "GeForce NOW". "The Epic Games Store" includes free games from "Epic Games" as well as "Steam" and "Ubisoft". There are only a few "Free" games available directly from within "Ubisoft". After you have logged in, you can search for "Free-to-Play" games and add them to your "Library". Check the list of GeForce NOW supported games, before adding a game to your Library (Games that are unsupported will not appear in "My Library" of  "GeForce NOW".). If you want to remove a game from your "Steam" Library (Click on Support > Search for the game you want to remove > Click on the Game > "I want to permanently remove this game from my account" > "Ok, remove the listed games from my account permanently"). You can find more detailed instructions for setting up accounts, in the following links for "Epic Games Store", "Steam", and "Ubisoft". It can be a hit or miss process to add games through the individual game stores and then "Resync" in "GeForce NOW". We have found that a more efficient way is to add games directly from within "GeForce NOW" on your TV/Streaming device (Free-to-Play category > Select Game > Mark as Owned > Choose "Not now" if asked to Resync > Yes, continue). The number of games listed in your connected accounts will not increase but the games will be added to "My Library". This process does not work with all games. Free games include "Rocket League", "Fortnite (Battle Royale)", "Path of Exile", "World of Warplanes", "Smite 2" and many more.

The website geforcenow.com/help/connections provides help if you are having trouble connecting your "GeForce NOW" account to "Steam", "Ubisoft", or other game store accounts. Note that with a Free Membership in "GeForce NOW", users will have to wait longer for a "Rig" before being able to play for one hour. After your hour is over, you can simply wait for another "Rig" to become available and play again. You can also install software from any of the supported game stores onto your PC, instead of using Google Chrome. Many of the games that are available will not run unless you first install connection software onto your PC. The software available from the game store you choose may not work with older computers. Of those we have listed, we were only able to install and run "Epic Games Launcher" software on our PC. "Epic Games Launcher" will require Windows 10 (64-bit) or newer, in the future. As soon as you have installed the software, you can search for "Free-to-Play" games and add them to your "Library". You will need a Wireless Gamepad/Controller in order to pair/connect to your streaming device via Bluetooth and play games. The more affordable Xbox Wireless Controller (Carbon Black) is currently (Mar 2025) on sale for about $45.00 at Walmart.
